Carrie-Anne Moss was immersed in the pages of her beloved book, Women Who Run with the Wolves, particularly a chapter on Baba Yaga, when she received an offer to join the upcoming series, Yaga. To her, the timing seemed like a meaningful coincidence.
In a conversation with CBC’s Eli Glasner, Moss revealed her long-standing connection to the book by Clarissa Pinkola Estés, stating that the chapter she was reading resonated with the project she was being presented with. She emphasized her belief in such synchronicities guiding her life decisions.
Yaga, a dark mystery-thriller series, was conceived by Canadian playwright Kat Sandler, adapted from her 2019 stage play. The show features Noah Reid from Schitt’s Creek as private investigator Charlie Rapp, on a quest to locate missing heir Henry Park, portrayed by Hudson Williams from Heated Rivalry. Set in the fictional coastal town of Whittock, the storyline draws parallels to the enigmatic Slavic legend of Baba Yaga, known for her unpredictable nature and dwelling in a hut perched on chicken legs.
Upon receiving a letter from Sandler outlining the role of Katherine Hargrove, a professor with a penchant for younger men, Moss carefully reviewed the script and Sandler’s vision before accepting the part.
Filming in Victoria has brought Moss back to her roots in British Columbia, where she spent summers with her relatives, reminiscing about her childhood in the region.
Growing up in Burnaby and later residing in Granville Island during high school, Moss’s passion for acting was ignited by her early exposure to school plays, musicals, and performing arts groups in Vancouver. She expressed her deep emotional connection to television shows that inspired her desire to pursue a career in acting.
Transitioning from Vancouver to Toronto as a model, Moss eventually landed her breakthrough role in the TV series Dark Justice, leading her to Los Angeles. Despite facing challenges in her early days in LA, Moss remained steadfast in her pursuit of acting, driven by a genuine passion rather than a desire for fame.
Her resilience paid off when she secured the iconic role of Trinity in The Matrix franchise after facing setbacks in her career. Reflecting on her journey, Moss acknowledged the transformative impact of rejection and emphasized the importance of trusting the path that unfolds.
Moss’s portrayal of Trinity propelled her to international stardom, leading to roles in various films and her return to The Matrix series in 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections. Balancing her career with motherhood, Moss cherishes the time spent raising her children and values the moments of family togetherness.
Currently residing in New Hampshire for a quieter lifestyle, Moss remains contemplative about the role of artificial intelligence in creative pursuits, expressing concerns about its impact on human creativity and storytelling. Despite her reservations about AI, Moss remains focused on leveraging storytelling as a tool for fostering empathy and connection.
As she navigates her future endeavors, Moss finds herself drawn back to her roots in British Columbia, embracing the unfolding opportunities that come her way.
