Canada’s Ellie Black, a four-time Olympian, and her team finished in eighth place in the women’s team final at the 54th world artistic gymnastics championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands. This event serves as a key qualifier for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Despite starting strong and moving up to fifth place after the uneven bars routine, Canada’s performance on the balance beam dropped them to eighth overall. The Canadian team, consisting of Gabrielle Black, Coralie Demers, Lia-Monica Fontaine, Lia Redick, and Ellie Black, scored 158.096 across the four disciplines, compared to their 160.130 score in the qualifying round. Zoe Tsaprailis served as a reserve member.
China emerged as the winner with a score of 165.764, claiming its second world championship title and securing a direct qualification spot for the L.A. Olympics. The United States took the silver medal with a score of 165.531, extending their streak of consecutive medals at world championships. Japan secured the bronze medal and will send a five-member team to the Summer Games for the first time since 1966. This victory marked China’s first gold at a major international competition since the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Looking ahead, Canada has qualified for the 2023 world championships in Chengdu, China, where the remaining Olympic spots will be determined, along with subsequent continental pathways. Ellie Black, a seasoned gymnast competing in her 10th world championships, led the Canadian team on the beam with a score of 13.733. Redick excelled on the floor with a score of 13.300, while Fontaine showcased her skills on the vault (14.166) and floor (13.366).
On the other hand, Russia faced challenges during the final competition, finishing in sixth place. The absence of key experienced athletes, including Angelina Melnikova, impacted their performance, leading to a fall on the uneven bars at the start of the event. China’s consistent routines and strong performances secured their victory over the American team, setting the stage for heightened competition heading into the 2028 Olympics.
The upcoming Games may see stars like Simone Biles, Suni Lee, and Jade Carey competing, with speculation surrounding Biles’ decision to join the team. The gymnastics community eagerly anticipates the next chapter in the sport’s evolution as athletes gear up for the Los Angeles Olympics.
