In the final stretch of Ottawa’s 2026 mayoral race, four prominent candidates showcased their strengths in a CBC Ottawa studio on Wednesday night. Hosted by Omar Dabaghi-Pacheco and Rebecca Zandbergen, the debate featured Alex Lawson, Jeff Leiper, Neil Saravanamuttoo, and Mark Sutcliffe.
As the Oct. 26 election approaches, Sutcliffe, seeking re-election, highlighted the progress made since 2022. However, his opponents criticized his plans for the future, questioning the delay in addressing key issues like crime, transit, and affordability during his current term.
Lawson emphasized his preparedness with concrete plans, including cost-saving measures and increased police presence. Saravanamuttoo focused on a populist approach, advocating for town hall engagement and a thorough review of city expenditures.
Discussions ranged from a potential data center moratorium to mayoral powers. Candidates outlined their visions for the city in 2030, with Sutcliffe prioritizing affordability, Lawson focusing on improved services and job opportunities, Saravanamuttoo aiming for infrastructure improvements and public housing, and Leiper emphasizing community-driven decision-making.
With the election days away, voters will choose from a diverse pool of candidates, including council and school trustee nominees. CBC Ottawa will provide comprehensive coverage of the election results on voting day.
Polling stations will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., offering residents a chance to shape the city’s future.
