A city council member who is also running for mayor in Charlottetown has been issued a fine by the local police for illegally passing a school bus. Mitchell Tweel disclosed that the incident took place in September but the citation was officially submitted to the provincial court only recently.
Tweel admitted that he momentarily lost focus while driving past the school bus and acknowledged his mistake. He promptly stopped his vehicle and reported the violation to the authorities. Tweel expressed regret for his actions, stating, “I take full responsibility… I’m very sorry that this had happened. I was really upset with myself.”
Representing Ward 4 – Spring Park, Tweel has been a member of the city council since 1994 and is currently serving his ninth consecutive term. Despite the penalty for failing to stop for a school bus in Prince Edward Island being severe, including potential driving suspension and hefty fines, Tweel has accepted his error and plans to pay the fine without contest.
He remains optimistic about his mayoral campaign, believing that transparency and accountability are crucial. Tweel emphasized, “I think honesty is the best policy… once I realized what had occurred, I took the responsible course of action.” Voters in Charlottetown are set to cast their ballots on November 2.
