A new public awareness campaign addressing drug-facilitated sexual abuse, led by Caroline Darian and her mother, Gisèle Pelicot, aims to shine a light on the issue of chemical submission. Pelicot bravely revealed her identity during the trial of her husband, Dominique Pelicot, who was convicted in 2024 of drugging and assaulting her for a decade. The campaign, initiated by MendorsPas in France, showcases portraits of victims with incomplete sentences to emphasize the silence and invisibility of such abuse.
Statistics show that about 75% of victims know their abusers, highlighting that such crimes often occur within familiar settings. Darian, who has her personal experience with abuse, has been a vocal advocate for victims. Despite a period of estrangement, Darian and Pelicot have united to combat drug-facilitated sexual violence.
Recently, they were honored with the 2026 Trailblazer Award for their advocacy efforts. Darian hopes the campaign will break the stigma surrounding chemical submission, encourage victims to seek help, and prompt toxicology tests for validation. The campaign has already prompted others to come forward with their stories, signaling a growing awareness of drug-facilitated abuse.
