After numerous delays and a prolonged waiting period, drivers are on the verge of utilizing the entire length of the Team Gushue Highway. The Newfoundland and Labrador government has announced the official opening, scheduled for 10 a.m. NT on Friday at the Admiralty House Communications Museum’s annex in Mount Pearl.
Key figures including Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Barry Petten, Fisheries Minister Loyola O’Driscoll, MP Tom Osborne, Mount Pearl Mayor Dave Aker, and St. John’s Mayor Danny Breen are set to attend the event. Additionally, Olympian Brad Gushue is expected to make an appearance.
The highway, linking the western edge of St. John’s to the Outer Ring Road, has been in construction for more than two decades, completed in multiple stages. Initially named the Bifurcation Road in 2001, it was later renamed the Team Gushue Highway in 2006 to honor Brad Gushue and his team’s Olympic gold medal win in men’s curling at Turin, Italy.
Originally slated for completion in 2014, the project faced delays before reaching this milestone. Minister Petten will provide further insights on the opening and future construction plans on CBC Radio’s The St. John’s Morning Show.
