A local organization dedicated to enhancing parental involvement in their kids’ education has voiced their concerns following the Waterloo Region District School Board’s refusal to distribute their message urging parents to participate in the municipal election.
The Waterloo Region District School Board Parent Involvement Committee (WRDSB PIC) is a parental group focused on holding public education accountable to parents and collaborating with the school board’s director of education to enhance communication with parents. Amanda Mohammad serves as the chair of the WRDSB PIC.
Mohammad emphasized the importance of educating individuals on the significance of voting and participating in the democratic process, highlighting the crucial role of trustees in the education system. Despite this, many individuals are unaware of the trustee’s role, which is foundational to the education system.
The group had requested the school board to send an email to all families, promoting the importance of voting. However, the school board declined, citing adherence to board policies.
The WRDSB stated that it must remain impartial and avoid any perception of favoritism towards candidates or influencing election outcomes, as outlined in their policies. The rejected message by the WRDSB PIC did not endorse any specific candidates but simply encouraged people to vote.
The rejection of the message has sparked broader discussions within the group about the importance of democracy and voter participation. Although the WRDSB is not under provincial supervision, the refusal to disseminate the voting message raised concerns about potential political implications.
The committee’s objective aligns with provincial legislation, aiming to engage parents in improving student achievement and well-being by effectively communicating with parents and the board’s director.
Mohammad stressed the significance of providing credible information to parents about the role of trustees, as some are unaware of the trustees’ responsibilities in guiding parents through the education system.
With the upcoming trustee elections, Mohammad urges people to research candidates, engage with other parents, and familiarize themselves with the trustee candidates to make informed voting decisions. Andrea Perrella, an associate professor of political science, highlighted the importance of paying attention to trustee elections amid concerns of low voter turnout in this category.
As the election approaches, the emphasis is on educating and mobilizing parents to participate in trustee elections and make informed decisions for the betterment of the education system.
