Elon Musk has unveiled plans to construct a $16.8 billion chip factory in southeastern Texas, which he claims will be the largest building globally. The project, named Terafab, was announced by Musk, who serves as the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, in response to the surging demand for advanced chips driven by artificial intelligence advancements.
Terafab, situated approximately 70 miles outside Houston, is set to bridge the gap between current chip supply and the future’s computational requirements. The facility, described as an advanced semiconductor fab, is expected to support Musk’s AI ventures, including xAI under SpaceX, which necessitate data centers equipped with semiconductors. Additionally, Tesla’s electric vehicles and humanoid robots will rely on chips from the factory.
The combined chip demand from SpaceX and Tesla is anticipated to exceed the current global supply by over 1 terawatt of compute. Musk’s new chip factory will cover 100 million square feet, making it the largest of its kind globally. The facility will be vertically integrated, housing all phases of production under one roof, from manufacturing to packaging and testing. It is projected to employ 3,000 workers, primarily sourced from the local community, and will utilize water from a nearby reservoir to reduce environmental impact.
Musk envisions the factory as part of a broader strategy to build space-bound data centers and infrastructure. The investment in the initial construction phase is substantial, with potential future expansions expected to increase the total investment significantly. Texas Governor Greg Abbott praised the project, hinting at its expanding scale and recognizing Texas as a hub for fostering ambitious endeavors.
