Tampa Bay Rays catcher Liam Hicks did not initially stand out as a top prospect while growing up in Toronto or after his high school graduation. Hicks honed his exceptional batting skills during his teenage years with the Toronto Mets in the Canadian Premier Baseball League. Despite not receiving much attention early on, Hicks possessed a strong work ethic and a drive to enhance his abilities.
After showcasing his talent with the Mineral Area Cardinals in junior college, Hicks transferred to Arkansas State, eventually making his way to the major leagues and currently the World Series. Mineral Area’s hitting coach and recruiting coordinator, Jordan Thompson, highlighted Hicks’ natural hitting ability and continually improving strength and athleticism.
At 27 years old, Hicks joined the Rays this season following a trade with Miami. His impressive performance included 18 home runs, 82 RBIs, and a .284 batting average. Known for his collaboration with the Rays’ pitching staff, Hicks frequently appeared in a prominent position in the playoff batting order.
Described as a talented player and a person of high character by Rich Leitch, the vice president of operations for the Toronto Mets, Hicks is set to compete in Game 1 of the World Series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday at American Family Field.
Recalling Hicks’ early days with the Toronto Mets, Leitch acknowledged his raw talent and impressive development over the years. Despite not receiving immediate offers from American schools after his Grade 12 year, Hicks caught the attention of college recruiters with his exceptional swing and left-handed hitting.
Following a successful college career, where he excelled both at the junior college and Division I levels, Hicks progressed through the minor leagues before making his MLB debut with the Marlins in 2025. Thompson praised Hicks for his outstanding hitting capabilities and the continual improvement in his defensive skills.
As the only Canadian on the Rays’ roster, Hicks has stood out among MLB rookies with impressive stats, including a remarkable walks/strikeout rate and a low out-of-zone swing percentage. Leitch emphasized that Hicks embodies the characteristics of a Rays player, excelling in baseball fundamentals and statistical performance.
Additionally, Hicks represented Canada at the World Baseball Classic, showcasing his dedication as a team player according to Canada manager Ernie Whitt. Leitch commended Hicks as a role model, emphasizing his relentless work ethic and proactive approach to self-improvement, making him an inspiration for aspiring young players.
