The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIOBC) has concluded its investigation into the death of a woman following a wellness check by the Burnaby RCMP. The IIOBC’s report, released on October 22, 2026, states that there is insufficient evidence to suggest any wrongdoing by the officer involved, and the case will not be referred for potential charges.
The incident began when health authorities requested a wellness check by the Burnaby RCMP on March 18. A police officer entered the woman’s residence in a residential building around 2 p.m. PT that day and discovered her unresponsive. She was subsequently transported to a hospital by ambulance and pronounced dead the next day.
The IIOBC will examine whether the actions or lack thereof by the police played a role in the woman’s death. The woman’s identity has not been disclosed. Should the investigation reveal potential misconduct by the officers, the IIOBC’s chief civilian director has the authority to recommend charges to Crown prosecutors.
As an independent civilian oversight body, the IIOBC investigates incidents involving police officers or detention guards in British Columbia that lead to serious injury or death. Individuals with relevant information about this case are encouraged to reach out to the office for assistance.
