Renowned for his expertise in cultivating produce over four decades, Todd Kline excels in maximizing his crop yield. Hailing from Shawville, Quebec, Kline has set national benchmarks with his oversized fruits and vegetables, ranging from colossal tomatoes to prize-winning watermelons. However, when it comes to pumpkins, he has honed his technique to perfection.
Kline’s prowess in growing giant pumpkins has been evident as two of his mammoth specimens clinched top honors at recent competitions in Ontario. Eager to continue his winning streak, Kline is gearing up for the upcoming contest in Wellington on October 17, where he must submit a different pumpkin entry each time.
Displaying his impressive pumpkins to CBC Radio’s Ottawa Morning, Kline described the rigorous process required to outshine competitors at a weigh-off. His pumpkins, measuring around five and a half feet in each direction, boast weights comparable to that of a small car.
At the Port Elgin Pumpkinfest, Kline’s winning pumpkin tipped the scales at 700 kilograms (1,542.5 pounds), earning him a substantial prize of $3,200. Similarly, in Woodbridge, Ontario, his pumpkin weighed 697 kilograms (1,536 pounds), securing another victory.
With a deep-rooted passion for gardening that dates back to his childhood, Kline reminisced about showcasing his finest produce at The Shawville Fair. Initially cultivating conventional vegetables like tomatoes and sweet corn, Kline’s interest was piqued when he received pumpkin seeds from local fair attendees, which sparked his love for growing pumpkins.
Managing and transporting such massive pumpkins presents its challenges, requiring Kline to utilize a specialized tripod apparatus with straps and a chain hoist for loading onto trailers. Despite the option to sell his prized pumpkin seeds, Kline prefers to distribute them among friends and community members, emphasizing the camaraderie cultivated through his shared passion.
Looking ahead to the upcoming weigh-off in Wellington, Kline anticipates a competitive yet thrilling event, aiming for another top-ranking position. Excited about participating in the festive parade alongside his pumpkins, Kline is poised for another remarkable day of showcasing his exceptional harvest.
