Three students lost their lives in a tragic school shooting incident that occurred in the southern part of the Philippines. Among the casualties was a 16-year-old suspected gunman who ultimately took his own life. The incident left eight other individuals wounded, with four of them in critical condition. The victims, all students between the ages of 14 and 17, were caught up in the violence in Banga town, South Cotabato.
Albert Palencia, the mayor of Banga town, revealed that the suspected gunman had given hints of his intentions to his friends, stating that he planned to carry out his actions after lunch. Despite being known for his humor, the friends did not take him seriously. Tragically, after lunch, the shooter commenced firing at students, injuring 10 before ending his own life.
In response to this devastating event, South Cotabato governor Reynaldo Tamayo emphasized the importance of responsible gun ownership. He urged parents to ensure that firearms are securely stored and inaccessible to minors to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future. Tamayo stressed the need for collective efforts in safeguarding schools, highlighting the challenges faced in monitoring thousands of students.
This incident adds to a concerning trend of school shootings in the Philippines, with two other fatal incidents reported since June. School shootings were previously uncommon in the country. Last month, a student live-streamed a horrific act of violence by shooting and killing another student before committing suicide in Zamboanga. In June, a public high school in Tacloban witnessed a tragic attack where three students lost their lives and many others were injured by classmates who opened fire on campus.
Despite having strict regulations on gun ownership, such as background checks and psychological evaluations, illegal firearms continue to pose a threat in the Philippines. The authorities and communities must work together to address these alarming incidents and ensure the safety of students and schools across the country.
