The Winnipeg Jets have taken action against goaltender Connor Hellebuyck for his failure to attend training camp, the NHL team revealed on Wednesday evening. General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff is set to speak to the press on Thursday morning, although the duration of the suspension was not disclosed.
Hellebuyck, a highly decorated player with three Vezina Trophy wins and the 2025 Hart Trophy for NHL MVP, had made a public trade request on August 27. According to a statement released on behalf of Hellebuyck by his agent, Ray Petkau, the goalie had privately asked for a trade “several months ago” and had allowed time for the matter to be handled “discreetly and respectfully.”
Expressing gratitude for his time with the team, Hellebuyck acknowledged Winnipeg as his NHL home throughout his career. He reminisced about the day when the Jets took a chance on him back in 2012 while he was playing in Odessa, Texas, emphasizing his dedication to proving their decision right.
Cheveldayoff had previously mentioned that trade offers for Hellebuyck were being considered ahead of June’s NHL draft, without confirming the goaltender’s trade request at that time.
