Amid soaring fuel prices, the proprietors of a dairy farm in Cormack, Newfoundland, are facing the impact of increased costs. Michelle and Eric Spears, who operate Cornerstone Farm with 200 cows on 500 acres, have seen a significant strain on their budget due to the surge in fuel prices over the past year. The escalating costs have forced them to cut back on certain activities like land clearing, as fuel expenses have made it prohibitive to operate machinery for additional tasks beyond essential farm operations.
The Spears estimate that by year-end, they will have spent an extra $75,000 to $85,000 on fuel compared to the previous year. The spike in diesel prices is attributed to global conflicts, including tensions in the U.S.-Israel-Iran relations and supply disruptions like Russia’s temporary ban on diesel exports following attacks on its oil refineries in Ukraine.
Diesel plays a crucial role in various farm activities, from daily tasks like feeding livestock to seasonal operations such as fertilizing, snow removal, and transporting hay bales. As a response to the surge in fuel costs, the farm is striving to conserve fuel usage wherever possible, leading to a reduction in land clearing activities. This reduction comes at a challenging time, considering the hay shortage experienced by farmers across Newfoundland and Labrador due to adverse weather conditions in the previous year.
Eric expressed concern over the uncertainty of fuel price fluctuations, emphasizing the need for better government intervention to regulate prices and support consumers and small businesses. Michelle echoed these sentiments, suggesting measures such as temporary tax relief on fuel for small businesses to alleviate the financial burden faced by enterprises grappling with escalating fuel expenses.
Monitoring fuel prices closely, the Spears have observed a significant uptick this year, prompting them to seek efficiency gains and absorb the additional costs to sustain their operations. The couple emphasized the widespread impact of rising fuel prices on businesses and consumers alike, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to mitigate the effects of the fuel cost crisis.
